A survey published by Business Daily on 27th July 2022 revealed that 80% of Micro, Small, and medium size enterprises (MSMES) in Africa fail within five years of establishment. Many factors contribute to this narrative, including harsh economic environments, lack of access to capital, poor business practices that have stunted the growth and transition of micro-businesses and businesses as a one-person show. The result is that they don’t scale to out-live their founders or become transgenerational.
According to the report, the most significant impediment to MSMEs’ growth is not a lack of capital but a lack of the skills necessary to manage a successful firm, as well as a lack of process, corporate structure, and business acumen.
